No matter how health-conscious we may try to be, there will be those times when we just want something sweet, it’s a normal craving, but it doesn’t have to be a craving that promotes cavities.

Instead of taming that sweet tooth with a candy bar or some ice cream, why not reach for a piece of sugarless gum? Aside from being a sugar-free alternative, you will also be helping your teeth to stay healthy.

Chewing gum promotes the production of saliva in your mouth. You may not want to think about saliva, but it is very important for your oral health. Not only will it help to wash away food debris and other substances, it will also neutralize the acids in your mouth that can create tooth decay and gum disease. The calcium in your saliva helps to keep your teeth strong. Sugarless gum can be especially effective if chewed for approximately 20 minutes after eating.

Ideally, you should look for sugarless gum that carries the Seal of Acceptance by the American Dental Association. If you can’t find ADA-approved gum, talk with your dentist and see what he recommends.

While sugarless gum can help you in the fight against tooth decay, it does not replace proper oral hygiene. You should still brush twice a day and floss before bed, and you should always see your dentist for regular cleanings and exams.
